A PUBLIC ART FIRST FOR AN INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED ARTIST

ARTISTS: SABINE MARCELIS

CLIENT: THE NORFOLK WAY ART TRAIL

LOCATION: NORFOLK

SERVICES: COMMISSIONING

An art installation for the EXPERIENCE project: the Norfolk Way Art Trail. The EXPERIENCE project is led by Norfolk County Council to drive out-of-season tourism across the area.

Internationally known designer Sabine Marcelis answered the call by Creative Giants for submissions to the project, being formally invited as one of 6 artists and delivering their first permanent public art piece: Honing Passage.

Installed in March of 2023 along the Weavers Way Trail and adjacent to a heritage site of the disused railway in Honing, Studio Sabine’s proposal scored highly for its integration in the location and how it would be experiential through the seasons.

Leading on the early planning process, the Creative Giants team engaged Millimetre to move forward with planning and cost feasibility.

Working closely with the EXPERIENCE team and Studio Sabine to make adjustments to the design to ensure it would thrive in the environment, tackle troubleshooting associated with public realm projects, and sourcing a UK based fabricator to complete the installation.

Honing Passage comprises two expansive colour-treated two-way mirror glass panels anchored by a robust subterranean metal structure.

It offers an ever-changing visual spectacle that dances with the local landscape.

The design, reminiscent of the railway carriages that would travel on the nearby tracks, delivers a sense of motion while allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the dynamic interplay of colour and reflection within the passage, accommodating wheelchair accessibility and serving as an enticing photo opportunity for all.
