Creative catch-ups: Sophie Oliveira Barata

May 1, 2025

A quick five minutes with world-renowned prosthetic artist and innovator as she shares her thoughts on creativity. Check out Sophie’s work here and her Creative Giants project here.

Q: How do people use creativity to help manage a loss or trauma?

A: In my experience, involving clients in the co-design process of their limb and allowing them to witness parts of its creation fosters a stronger psychological sense of ownership.

By actively participating in the reinvention of their body—something that, for many, has previously been a source of social stigma—they create a prosthetic that reflects their personality and values.

This results in an unspoken dialogue between the wearer and the public, sending a clear message that they take pride in their prosthetic.

It eliminates any feelings of pity, often attracting positive attention that boosts self-esteem and encourages constructive conversations about body differences. It shifts the focus from what is missing to what is present.

Q: What one thing would you advise to someone to help them become a top creative in their field?

A: Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Ensure that what you’re pursuing aligns with your core values, and push it as far as you can. Collaboration is invaluable, so be sure to credit those who’ve supported and contributed to your journey.

“Creative Giants helped me rethink how to effectively position my work in the commercial arts and culture sector, with a focus on exhibitions. Throughout the process, I found the team to be dynamic, thoughtful, adaptable, and tactful in their approach.”
